About The Artwork

With collagescapes, I begin with a painting on paper. I create proportional fields of different colors to represent a particular landscape. The painting is then cut up into small pieces for a collage where they are reconfigured into various patterns. The finished piece may appear abstract, but it is designed to retain the color palette of the place it represents Like them are not, ice plants are part of the California landscape. With that in mind I strived to capture their palette. I also used a pattern that referenced a patch of ice plants without attempting to be too literal. And, even though I understand the problems posed by invasive species, I confess to a certain fondness for ice plants.

I work primarily in mixed media, collage and landscape painting. My work has included maps, postcard-themed art and mail art projects. In 2013 I began moving away from found ephemera and shifted to making my own material. This started with a series called Collagescapes. With Collagescapes, I start by painting paper with areas of color representing the palette of a specific place. Next, I cut up the paper into hundreds of small pieces. The final steps are to randomize the pieces and then reassemble them in various geometric patterns. Collagescapes are both landscape paintings and collages. My latest work is a series called Post-Folk Art. It is a nod to the color palettes found in costumes, textiles, pottery and other forms of traditional Kashubian and Polish folk art.
