About The Artwork

This was inspired by the call for entries for the 2018 Passion For Freedom art competition. At first sight this looks like normal newsprint and the viewer might puzzle as to what this art work is about. Intrigued they may look closer and spot the words ‘FAKE NEWS’. These letters are hiding in plain sight, using the camouflage of their surroundings. Our media are engaged in a war of attrition between truth and falsehood. This viewer experience is an analogy for what is happening in our media on a daily basis. Fake news is everywhere and is undermining our confidence in what we read, see, and hear. Even our trusted sources may themselves have been misled by the peddlers of inaccurate, untrue, or even malicious information. Today’s true story is often contradicted tomorrow by new evidence, and can be reversed completely the day after. The term ‘fake news’ was made (in) famous by Donald Trump, President of the United States. Some would say he’s one of its arch practitioners. If true this means that the threat to the integrity of our public discourse comes from the very top. This means that those with a passion for truth must be on their guard constantly. We must all learn to read between the lines to prevent falsehoods wearing away our trust. But our scepticism mustn’t sour into cynicism. We should support the journalists and publishers who fight for the right to publish honest news, and who have the courage to speak truth to power.
