I was invited to create a work for an exhibition and auction in favour of the advertising industry NABS (National Advertising Benevolent Society): http://nabs.org.uk/event/nabs-art-auction/ I was inspired by the time of year when summer turns to autumn and leaves begin to fall in their endless annual cycle This collage on an A5 canvas is comprised of a leaf and a 125mm disc of P80 sandpaper. I use sandpaper as a symbol of the process of attrition. In this case a disc to represent the seasons. The leaf was collected on an autumn walk, pressed between layers of kitchen towel, and left for several years to dry. The sandpaper was bought in France ages ago. This type of disc was made to be attached to an electric drill, hence the single hole through which a bit and washer is bolted. Nowadays sandpaper discs usually have several holes around their perimeter and are designed to attach to Velcro-covered pads. I like these old-fashioned discs with the single hole and four cuts which are depressed by the bolt and washer. The leaf stalk seemed to fit naturally through the hole.
