Marleen Pauwels 1959 Dendermonde Belgium Studied drawing and painting at the Academy Constantin Meunier in Brussels and etching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Aalst and Dendermonde. In 2001 she settled in Spain where she is working as a professional artist.
Over the years, the Flemish artist style has evolved using various media, from etching, collage and oil to mixed media. Currently she found the right expression with mixed media on panel. This is mainly the consequence of her removal to the medieval village Siurana in Catalonia. Here she discovered new materials with which she could experiment. Her use of colour has been inspired by the natural pigments she found during her many journeys through Spain. Marleen has an intensive manner of working. The wall often figures as the field of her work, as a place of her self-reflection, where it functions both as a mirror and an inscriptive surface. She creates these walls using different layers of paper, paint and sand. In her more recent work, the human figure is a constant, founded in her fascination with the fragility of human condition. Her lean, seemingly fragile characters appear when the foundation is finished. In her etches and drawings, the same figures appeared, but then they emitted more a wild energy. Now they are more serene but at the same time just as powerful, if not more powerful. At times transparent, then again obviously present, they dance over the paper or stand demurely against the wall. …Read More
