‘The Ritz’ is a giclée print made from a large-scale drawing in fountain pen and ink on paper. This piece of art work in it’s original form, is 150cm x 185cm.
'These Drawings' was a show of nine similar works at The Filmhouse, Edinburgh in January 2012.
The drawings are of buildings, covered with an adaptation of the classic blue and white willow pattern, of Spode china. This is normally seen decorating plates, tea sets and bowls. The pattern has been combined with characters from film, fashion and nature. They are also inspired by the illustrations and cartoons of Charles Altamont Doyle, Arthur Conan Doyle’s father, who lived in Edinburgh until the 1880’s.
‘The Ritz’ will be part of the next show of large-scale drawings in London,
November 2012.

‘These Drawings’ is an exhibition of large-scale works on paper drawn with fountain pen and ink.
The drawings are all of buildings in Edinburgh mainly cinemas. They are covered with and adaptation of the classic blue and white willow pattern, of Spode china, which, normally decorates plate, tea sets and bowls. This pattern has been combined with characters from film and illustrations from the works of Charles Altamont Doyle.
There is a book exhibited in Surgeons Hall in Edinburgh called ‘The Doyle Diary’ by Michael Baker. It is about the life and works of Arthur Conan Doyle’s father, Charles Altamont Doyle. The book is full of drawings, illustrations and cartoons, which became another part of the inspiration for this show.
The buildings in ‘These Drawings’ are either cinemas, of which some are no longer functioning as cinemas, or, they are empty premises. Now boarded up, they once housed some form of entertainment.
To begin with the project was to be about creating a very decorative façades for run down and derelict, dilapidated buildings. However when one of these was an old cinema on Clerk Street, it became about drawing cinemas past and present.
Cinemas are places where you can experience nostalgia, astounding modern technology, romance and extreme violence. They create an escape route into another dimension. These drawings in this exhibition, are not concerned with representing the ‘everyday’ and or ‘mundane’, they are more about making a bit of fantasy.
