About

Born in South Korea, imigrated to New York, 1995.Live in New Jersey, USA. I am interested in all kinds of visual art based on reality. I seek to find the truth in the human form and to translate that into my own vision of natural beauty.

Shin-Young recently creates portraits juxtaposing ordinary, routine tasks against a backdrop of current news articles featuring a variety of social, political and environmental issue and events.

She began studying art in her home country of South Korea, obtaining a B.F.A from Hyosung women’s University on Daegu. She has additionally studied at the Art Students League of NY mostly under Harvey Dinnerstein and Kenneth Mclndoe and “Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc” in Barcelona, Spain after she received her M.F.A in painting from The Graduate School of Figurative Art of the New York Academy of Art by 2001.

An’s work had solo exhibitions at the M. Christina Geis Gallery on Georgian Court University in 2010, at the Monmouth Museum in 2009, Greenwich village in 2007 and “La Bolsa” gallery in Barcelona, Spain in 2004, and more than 70 juried group exhibitions throughout the USA, Spain, Japan and S. Korea since she immigrated to the USA in 1995.

She has been granted a 2011 Felloship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a Xavier Gonzalez & Edwards Grant for Painting from the Artists League of NY and approximately more than 30 awards from national and international competitions.

Work
The main theme of my recent work is exploring the unfortunate reality of our present world.

While reading the newspaper, articles began affecting me to the point that I realized I am a somewhat powerless artist and I wanted this to be reflected in my work. It has given me the opportunity to respond to social and environmental issues. I depict these reactions through the visual interaction of limbs, portraits and flowers painted against a backdrop of current news articles that have touched me. The limb series of my work juxtapose ordinary routine tasks with exceptional and often disturbing events.
