About The Artwork

Original unframed oil painting on 1.5" thick gallery wrapped canvas. I saw this lobsterman a few years ago, sauntering down Widgery Wharf in Portland, Maine. He walked with an attitude, and I liked everything about him including his long hair, yellow overalls, and a tank top showing his muscular shoulders. The title of the piece comes from the stylized skull on his tank top. The skull is the logo of the Misfits, a 1970's era punk rock band. I really felt that this guy could be a pirate or buccaneer. Although I typically place the figures that I paint in scenes, for this painting, I chose to leave the background orange. There is something about this background color that really focuses the eye on the figure.

I was born in Long Beach, California in 1949. My initial foray into art was as a ten-year old when my parents enrolled me in watercolor lessons. A gradually developing (and undiagnosed until some years later) case of nearsightedness however diminished my interest. (How can you paint something that you can’t see clearly?) By the time I was outfitted with glasses, I was on his way to a career in science, receiving a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1976. After a stint as a postdoctoral fellow at the Medical College of Wisconsin, I taught medical students how their lungs function and did research in pulmonary physiology and pathophysiology at the Northeast Ohio Medical University. After retiring and moving to Maine with my wife Dawn in 2007, and some fifty years after my first lessons, Dawn and artist Joye Moon, convinced me to pick up a paintbrush again. Since that time, I have been privileged to learn from artists Joye Moon, Judith Kinsman, Guy Corriero, Dennis Rafferty, Russel Whitten, Susan Roux, Dan Graziano, and of course my immensely talented wife. I paint in oil, acrylic, and watercolor and am a member of the Art Guild of the Kennebunks. My paintings have been juried into shows of the New England Watercolor Society, the Rockport Art Association, the University of Southern Maine, and the Union of Maine Visual Artists. My work can be seen at the Wright Gallery in Cape Porpoise, Maine, and online on both my website, mikemaron.artspan.com and saatchiart.com.
