About The Artwork

Based on work by the chemist George Field who, in 1845, constructed a color-circle from the basic colors of red, yellow and blue. Field was thus wishing to take up a position opposed to Newton. Secondary and tertiary colours arise through progressive superimposition. Meanings were allocated to the colours: hot (red) and cold (blue/green) stand opposite one another; likewise advancing and retiring. George Field also saw a connection between color and sound, and so draws our attention to one of the stumbling blocks of the era: namely, an understanding of the carrier medium of light. This large work was created to evoke the feeling of an ancient tapestry to be wall hung in a large space. It was created with Oil, Woodstain, Acrylic, Charcoal, Gold & Copper Leaf, including multiple stains on the surface made with vintage 1962 Bordeaux.

Smith uses a wide variety of materials and mediums including reclaimed silkscreen frames, discarded analog technology, luxury brands and commercial packaging. She also incorporates mathematics, organic chemistry, mechanics and photography into her work. Frequently working with 8mm film and other analog film mediums, Smith blends the practice of filmmaking and painting. Her recent work explores the relationship between pop culture, luxury brands, political upheaval and crisis to create an unexpected and transformative experience.
