About The Artwork

Mohiniyattam is an Indian classical dance form that originated in the state of Kerala, South India. Mohiniyattam dance gets its name from the word ‘Mohini’ – a historical enchantress avatar of the Hindu god ‘Vishnu’, who helps the good prevail over evil by developing her feminine powers. The word ‘Attam’ means dance. This is mostly a solo dance form performed by women. This painting depicts the dancer in a off-white plain sari embellished with bright golden colored brocade, embroidered in its borders, with a complimenting choli or blouse. A pleated cloth having concentric golden coloured bands adorns the front part of the sari from the waist and highlights her dance movement. Jewelry adorns her head, hair, ears, neck, waist and wrist. Musical anklets, made of leather straps with small metallic bells attached to it are wrapped in her ankles. Her hair is tied on left side of her head in tight round chignon hairstyle and decorated with white jasmine flowers ringed around the bun. These intricacies beautified the dancer and I enjoyed painting these details.

The pseudonym of Radhika Rammoorthy is ArtzyRads I am a self taught artist. Right from childhood, drawing & painting formed an extension of my expression and dabbling in colors epitomized freedom and excitement. Born in Bangalore, raised in different cities in India and in the African subcontinent, cultural observations of varied lifestyles added myriad perspectives to my art. Made Chennai, the temple city of India, my home, the traditional dance forms inspired my paintings. My paintings bring rich color and is not restricted to any particular subject. I love to explore the unknown and move away from the mundane, thus bringing diverse forms of subjects, materials, mediums and paintings techniques. While I have made a career in the disability sector in India for over two decades, painting kindles the creative passion in me and it makes me feel the world is indeed a beautiful place to live!
