About The Artwork
This mosaic is built on a blue glass vessel. When I started this piece, I intended for it to be green and white with a Japanese-inspired set of interlocking geometric patterns. The vessel did not cooperate with that plan. First, it wanted to be divided horizontally. Next, when I tried to cut the glass for the first pattern, it would not cut small and geometric. Instead, the scores on the glass ran far and curved. The petals for the lilies made themselves in this way. It was up to me to allow them to come into being and get them secured before they blew away. I believe that being an artist is about a person becoming sensitive to the desires and needs of materials, not the other way around.
