About The Artwork

Before I realized my original drawings were not flat, I thought my greatest challenge was to figure out how to merge the two genders: ‘flats’ and ‘sharps’. Then I discovered a way to arrange the polygons so they could both share an apex and each have a parallel side. It was a matter, in effect, of rotating them. There are numerous stages of rotation. In this case the circle ends opposite, or on top of, the triangle. It forms part of 3c Z-Axis Rotation of Progressive Polygons - Five Variables. A transparent version of this image is symmetrical. In this case though, opaque polygons are placed on top of one another. On the left the triangle is on top; on the right the triangle is on the bottom. I exploited the thickness of the lines. It allows the stacking of the polygons on the right-hand side to appear coming out from under a black circle (which would be on top) - but the black circle is actually on the bottom coming from the left. Yes, that’s a contradiction. But this is an illusion (a deception) permitted only by what could be considered an encumbrance: line thickness. As well as determining how many polygons we can actually view, line thickness allows the deception. The use of understated spectral color helps to underscore the importance of line.
