About The Artwork

Painted on Linen canvas A young woman admiring her inner beauty, she wears diamonds and is full of life. On her head, an hourglass that represents the sand of time will run out for every human life. The Retro Alarm Clock means she is constantly worried and reminded that her biological clock is ticking. This work explores the great expectations African society placed on women and the pressure into submission that being married and having children is the only ultimate goal to feeling important in life and being part of something that perhaps doesn't bring shame to their families. Women who refuse to bow to these pressures are assailed by a society, those who are self-righteous with their own selfish agenda, and hide behinds tradition to repression, name-calling and leaving African women in despair. In the end, everything is just temporary. So feel no shame and set yourself free from societal pressures. Note; Diamond necklaces are plastics crystal beads Gems From the Women of Strenght series Women of strength series is celebrating the women who came here before me. Women of hope who are not afraid of taking bold steps in times of challenges. Women who show courage and women who find an alternative means of survival in a hopeless situation.
