My favorite Van Gogh painting, "Roses" at the Met, is a composition of the most delicious pale green. It features a bouquet of once-pink roses in a deeper green vase and a delightful symphony of brush strokes and thickened areas of paint. The work is enchanting and I wish to pull up a chair before it and just move in. I cannot do this, of course, and so I find myself tracing its influence through my own work. The green of this piece is clearly an echo of that wonderful Van Gogh. My floral still life features a bouquet of deep violet purple irises, long arching grasses in a medley of middle and bottle greens, and deep emerald eucalyptus leaves with splashes of lime, curling from delicate pale pink stalks. A deep blue vase, flattened on the plane, holds this arrangement. The vase is adorned with a pattern of geometrically drawn lions and medallions in red, white, and gold. It is a playful piece but also a serene and springy one. An ode to green, to spring, to cycles of life, for the long winter months. This floral still life is painted on cradled birch board using velvety matte acrylic gouache paints. It will ship lovingly wrapped in layers of glassine and cushiony padding and packaged in a box. It is an original.

Lara Meintjes, also known as Agnes, is a South African artist, happily living in Oakland, California. She is particularly interested in arrangements of color, and the effects of each color's presence on the others within a composition. She also really likes flowers and awkward ceramic objects. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
