This is probably my favorite among the David Hockney inspired chair series that I painted at the end of 2017. It features a vibrant coral pink corner, filled with plants in pots and baskets. A wicker woven chair sits in the corner, inhabited by a big soft cushion that features a casual crayon indoor plant pattern, and beneath this, a blue, white and cream rug featuring a playful horse pattern covers most of the deep teal concrete floor. A window appears in the background, with indoor plants on the window sill and a fiddle leaf fig tree growing out of a wonderfully slouchy basket tucked in behind the chair. The piece is drawn in marker, painted with gouache and then varnished with a coat of matte spray varnish to help protect the beautiful colors from the sun, and the gouache from its own characteristic dryness. It was painted on cradled board and is ready to frame to the buyers personal taste. This series was inspired by a David Hockney chair piece that hung in my father and stepmum's living room during my teen years. Hockney's chairs have such character, they always feel like intimate portraits. Combining my love of chair paintings as a style of portraiture and my obsession with the color work of Henri Matisse, this series offers a slightly offbeat look into the private lives of interesting pieces of furniture.

Lara Meintjes, also known as Agnes, is a South African artist, happily living in Oakland, California. She is particularly interested in arrangements of color, and the effects of each color's presence on the others within a composition. She also really likes flowers and awkward ceramic objects. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
