About The Artwork
"Subjected to Arrest", is a series of portraits of men,women and children painted from actual and recreated mug shots. A mug shot is taken when an individual is arrested regardless of whether or not a person is ever charged let alone found guilty of a crime. The purpose of the mugshot is to record a likeness of a person, however the individuality of the person is lost as they are subsumed into the category of criminal, underclass, other. My intention is to subvert the dehumanizing nature of the mug shot and to create a painting which invites the viewer to engage with the image, study it and not look away. I make paintings that foster a connection between the viewer and the subject and that honours the individuality and humanity of the person depicted.
