About The Artwork

In some African tribes, the sangoma or witchdoctor would perform special rites to ensure victory and to protect the warriors going into battle. I have lived in Africa, I go back when I can and I am inspired by African culture and stories. This work started as a 'blot' painting - a technique of dropping paint onto paper, manipulating the paint in various ways and then leaving it to dry. Then I allow my imagination to go to work until an image/thought emerges. Now I know what that painting will become and I work until I it is done. Watercolour on Arches paper

I have drawn for as long as I can remember, my childhood endeavours becoming more proficient through my determined practice over the years. Throughout my adult life I have continued to draw, an activity that gives me great pleasure and satisfaction. I am an enthusiastic student of the techniques of the Old Masters and their widely varying portrayals of the human body, common to all, unique to each, and always challenging and inspiring to depict creatively. I am self-taught and paint in watercolour and, more recently, acrylic. I use a limited palette and only 3 or 4 top-quality brushes. I utilise the storehouse of impressions I have built up from my travels as a musician. My subconscious reworks these initial ideas in vivid, remembered dreams which become the inspirations for my work. www.studiobluesea.com www.studiobluesea.wordpress.com
