About The Artwork

The human tragedy in Aleppo, Syria inspired this painting. It is a dark painting of electric blue faces with staring eyes and a body language of arms and gesturing hands, filled with curvilinear sweeping lines of a portrait of survivors from this war torn, ravaged country and city with ancient and historic roots. Although, the faces show the suffering, panic, fear and anguish, it also portrays and documents the tremendous power of the human spirit for a collective ability to come together to endure the agonizing, horrific aspects of war. Above and beyond, these people still cling to a hope as innocent families and children, human shadows of victimized people to eventually come out from a catastrophic human disaster and rebuild their lives. The haunted images of people seen on TV and in newspapers capturing a weary, disillusioned, traumatized people, in contrast to a young man sitting at and playing a piano in the street surrounded by bombed out architectural ruins inspired me to create this painting to serve as a document and homage to the human will and capacity to survive the most inhuman, horrific conditions of war.
