The word "emollire" is a Latin verb that means "to soften" or "to make gentle." This word is derived from the Latin word "mollis," which means "soft" or "gentle." In Latin literature, "emollire" was often used in a figurative sense to describe the process of calming or soothing the emotions. For example, the Roman poet Virgil used the word in his epic poem "The Aeneid" to describe how the goddess Venus attempted to soften the heart of Jupiter, the king of the gods, in order to save her son Aeneas.
