About The Artwork

This painting is a copy of the famous relief "The Creation of Eve" by Jacopo della Quercia, a sculptor of the Renaissance period. I made this oil painted copy from the relief in the Arts and Research Museum at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. The work depicts the biblical plot of God's creation of Eve from the rib of Adam. Applying a new white layer to the copy, I reconsider this biblical plot, as well as the authenticity of this story, which embodies the patriarchal nature of this world. The process of the image covering signifies the fragments which were consigned to oblivion as well as the new beginning or new life. The white patches on the surface appear as a result of deliberate action to change the old image and gain the experience of history (Old Masters) in return and imbuing the art piece (old life) with new meaning.

I use a mix of techniques to create my paintings. I am interested in the aesthetics of hidden, undiscovered and often invisible matters. I consider/examine personal experience, feelings and involvement in the context of historical and social events in order to find opportunities for transformation and adaptation to new living conditions. I engage with social subjects such as power, stateless status, migrations, integration, assimilation, consumption, female issues and also rituals, traditions and the ghosts of the past, inhabiting and hacking our current state of affairs.
