[SOLD] There’s a squared section in the upper left area of this painting that is a deep blue with darker blue streaks running vertically through it. This inconspicuous shape is the key revelation for this painting; it is tears in rain. As I was making the piece, these last words spoken by the character Roy Batty in Blade Runner came into my mind as the perfect metaphor for the confusion of personal trauma (in any form) experienced amidst a global crisis. Regardless of the situation, typical support systems have not been in place, and so on an individual level, the person’s tears are essentially lost in the greater downpour. We’re still processing this one together, but for now, I like Anne Lamott’s thought that …”salvation will be local” and from Joseph Campell: “...everything in your life that seems to be obstructive can be transformed by your recognizing that it is the means for your transition.” That being said, in the meantime we can focus on the things that bring solace, like the teapot holding the healing tisane or medicinal drink; a pink moon bringing optimism for the future; white lanterns and a candelabra lighting the darkness; refractions that make rainbows... Finally, we can call on the magic of humor and blunt reckoning—here represented by the black and white diamond jester pattern.

My paintings include hints of two-dimensional icons, stained glass windows, ceremonial objects, carnivalesque paraphernalia, dressmaker pattern pieces, and carefully designed altars. I see the work as functional and as such it may resemble a strange alchemical device, a crude vessel, a protective figure, a fortune teller, a shamanic robe, an asymmetrical mandala…all of which shepherd the process of transformation. I am inspired by the decadence of Art Deco; the hope and efficiency of Mid-Century aesthetics; the joining of texture, light and comfort in interior design; the riotous maximalism in haute couture; the rawness of tribal mark making; and the implied doorway to the unseen in esoteric symbology. All of these influences are cradled in deep investigations into color, particularly its role as a visual phenomenon and catalyst for sparking feeling and narrative. My work is collected worldwide and featured in collections and collaborations in Denver, Seattle, New York City, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, Nanjing, Dubai, Edinburgh, and Amsterdam among other places.
