The Latin word "flos" means "flower" or "bloom." This word is the root of several words in modern Romance languages, such as the French word "fleur" and the Italian word "fiore." In Latin literature, "flos" was often used metaphorically to refer to the most beautiful or valuable part of something. For example, the Roman poet Ovid used the word in his poem "Metamorphoses" to describe the beauty of the young Narcissus, comparing him to a flower among other young men. In addition to its literal meaning, "flos" was also used in a symbolic sense. In Christian iconography, the image of a flower was often used to represent purity, beauty, and resurrection, and the term "flos" was sometimes used to refer to Christ or the Virgin Mary as the "flower" of humanity.
