About The Artwork
Carved from Olivewood. I will freely admit to having a serious Mermaid fetish. These creatures symbolise an unatainable anarchic freedom that is sadly impossible within the constraints of our modern society. But we still need to dream of the impossible. This Mermaid is obviously pregnant: an important step in the regrowth of an endagered species. Maybe I should start a breeding programme.

Paul Wood is an English Sculptor now back on the Greek island of Corfu after several years working as Stonemason in Germany. He makes hand carved sculptures in wood and stone, prefering to work with locally found materials. Often these materials are from recycled sources. His work is mainly figurative, and explores the sensual nature of both the material and the human body.
