About The Artwork

An in-between place. A transitional point where light meets dark. Where safety meets vulnerability - step out into the light or stay hidden in the shadows. A pivotal moment in space and time that all living things occupy. There was a time in my career when I did many plein air paintings. I was allowed on the Harriman Estate in New York on many occasions to paint and was told there was an albino doe on the property that would sometimes come out from the woods at twilight and graze by the edge where trees and meadow met. I never saw it, but always believed it existed. This work reflects those feelings.

David Bender is a Brooklyn based artist who studied at Seattle University, the Burnley School of Art, and the New York Academy of Art. Working in painting, sculpture and street art, Bender’s work weaves together remnants of experiences, dreams, thoughts, and events to create meditations on chance. His practice is influenced by his interest in the eastern wisdom traditions, and his works are imbued with a spirituality and a desire to explore the layers of reason, randomness and logic that make up each of our consciousnesses. Bender is the recipient of the Best in Show Award from the Woodstock School of Art Regional Exhibition, the Art Times Award from the Hudson Valley Art Association Invitational and is in the permanent collection of the Brinton Museum.
