Details: Variable Edition of 15 Signed and numbered on the back Screenprint with graphite powder and ink on Japanese paper Approx 34.5cm x 21.5cm Unframed About: Inspired by a Japanese woodblock print by Koho Shoda, an artist from the Shin-hanga (New prints) movement. I chose to use a soft, muted colour palette to help create a serene atmosphere, with the mood from the subdued colours creating an ambient light, the dawn sky reflects on the surrounding landscape and curve of the river, and the silhouettes of the trees add to the quiet and stillness of the scene. I mixed pinks and creams to create a colour blend for the effect of the sky changing colours at different times of day - because of the nature of printing a colour blend, each print is slightly different making it a variable edition. You can read more about the inspirations and see the process behind creating River by Dawn (after Koho Shoda) here. Hand pulled by the artist in her Brighton printmaking studio, this is the second print in this series that compliment each other when hung together. The other artwork is River by Moonlight (after Koho Shoda). Technique: This print was created by assembling a digital collage, made up of photographs taken in Brighton and the East Sussex area, before being taken into the print studio. The image was printed on a transparency and a mesh screen was coated in a light sensitive emulsion, which was left to dry in a dark room. When dry, the image was exposed onto the screen using UV light, with the black parts of the image blocking out the light, meaning that the emulsion didn’t harden on the darker parts of the image. The screen was then washed to remove any unexposed emulsion, leaving the image on the screen to be printed. Ink and graphite powder were mixed with printing medium and a squeegee was hand pulled to push the ink through the mesh on the areas of the exposed image, onto paper to create the finished screenprint.

Sherrie-Leigh Jones is an Artist and Printmaker based in Brighton, East Sussex. She creates limited edition and original landscape prints inspired by nature and changing seasons, offering the viewer a sense of escapism, a transportation to a new place and a journey through imagined landscapes. The Japanese woodblock printmaking movement known as Shin-hanga (New prints) and Sansuiga (Japan) or Shanshui (China); paintings which depict an idealised landscape using the forms of mountains, rivers, clouds and mist, inspire her prints. Mountainous landscapes and the romantic sublime also influence her work. To create her prints, she assembles collages using her travel photographs and photos taken on walks in the English countryside, which are then combined with paintings and occasionally found imagery. The finished compositions are then taken into the print studio to be exposed on screens and hand pulled as screenprints, resulting in the final artworks. Some prints are also hand printed using the cellulose transfer printing technique. Read more about the techniques used here. Jones exhibits in the UK and internationally, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2021. Her work is held in Jeremy Cooper's Collection and private collections in the UK, France, Germany, Taiwan, New York and L.A. In 2020, she was awarded an a-n Bursary: Time Space Money, supported by a-n The Artists Information Company and Arts Council England, and in 2018 was invited to be a part of Woolwich Contemporary Editions. In 2015, Jones was awarded a Print Futures Award and in 2013, her SS13 collaboration with fashion label, To Be Adored (tba), featured on the front cover of Grazia China.
