About The Artwork

Fine Art giclee print on Hahnemuehle photo rag paper Limited edition enlargement of a single image in award-winnning artist Sarah Kudirka's striking oil paint + polaroids series City Skies London. The image was based on a building-mounted billboard the artist saw, and snapped with her reconditioned Polaroid camera one day in east London, while walking down Shoreditch High Street (the advertising hoarding is no longer there). The location is close to the artist's studio and on the fringes of the City or 'square mile' business district, where the artist most likes to walk and find her inspiration, looking up at the sky squeezed in between the urban buildings. The original image (now in a private collection) on which this print is based is the size of a Polaroid picture, being painted directly onto the snap taken by the artist. Sarah closely directed the print enlargement and giclee proofing to bring out the beautiful colour flare or 'glitch' in the original polaroid she took, as well as showing her paint marks bolder and bigger than actual size. Unusually for the series, in this image the artist only partially painted over the instant snap she took, leaving photographic elements still visible. There are only a few of the entire series of paint on Polaroid works that follow this method (maybe 8 or 9 out of over 400 images) to date. This artwork is a furthermore a rare thing within Sarah Kudirka's complete oeuvre - the first and, at time of writing, only print that the artist has chosen to make from one of her original paintings, in a career that spans over 20 years.

Sarah Kudirka (nee Davenport) is an award-winning contemporary British artist who makes art about the shapes and edges of things: buildings, cities, objects and words. An artist producing striking and mature work, she brings both passion and playfulness to her work. Sarah's paintings are made by using oil paint and pencil applied directly over Polaroid shots that she has taken while walking through cities. The idea is simple: walk and look up at the sky in between the buildings. The resulting art is compelling. She reimagines the city streets and skyline in paint and pencil on Polaroid scale, never copying the photo obliterated beneath. Her series 'City Skies London' now numbers over 400 images and they are available both unframed and in exquisitely framed grids. Just a couple have been enlarged and are offered as limited edition prints. Sarah is now also working on series about Berlin, Glasgow, Hong Kong and Sydney. The artist is inspired by all sorts of stuff to do with material culture; street furniture; the built environment; urban landscape; design; language and architecture. Characteristically lo-tech and handmade in aesthetic, Sarah Kudirka's work is regarded as technically-innovative, accessible and beautiful.
