About The Artwork

Ojizousama, mokuhanga print (woodblock print made with japanese method mokuhanga: the print is hand-rubbed using sumi ink and watercolors) on japanese kozo white paper, 2008. Very small edition (only print proofs) of a popular japanese subject: the Jizou. Ojizousama is one of the Japan's most loved divinities, as he is affiliated with protection and the saving of “lost” souls. In Japan Jizō's stone statues can be seen in gardens, temples and roadsides, wearing tiny children’s clothes, red bibs or red hats. Ojizousama is seen as the guardian of childrens and also believed to be the protector of travellers and Firefighters. I love the Ojizousama's small, funny statues hidden in gardens and when I went to Japan to study the mokuhanga woodblock method, I dedicated my first mokuhanga print to this lovely divinity.

Elettra Gorni says: "I was born in Suzzara, near Mantua, Italy, in 1967. Currently living, working and studying in Milan. I'm an artist, researcher and teacher inspired by old japanese books and prints; my artistic practice is intended to suggest intriguing surrealism using simple shapes, black/white, only few colors and the void. My preferred medium is japanese woodblock (mokuhanga), since this printing process allows me to build simple, meditative, flat images with a strong power of evocation, but I work also with painting, sculpture, ceramics and drawing".
