What can I say? ...you see everything. It was in year 1998 and I was traveling reporting for AP on the election months and political happening in the new states of Germany, the East. What strange countries for me, all of them: Thüringen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern... You might remember our former Canchelor: Mr. Gerhard Schröder! He had a political event and show in Magdeburg in the evening time, so I spend my leissure time in the afternoon driving through for me completely new "landscapes", like typical "Plattenbau-Siedlungen" (mass-housings) and found between all these desperate housings and locations a very peaceful skating chanel for the kids. I jointed them and I made some pictures of these young boys, when they flew through the air! They were really curios about me and could not understand that somebody is interested in them! However, it was time to go and the young boy stopped me with a laughing smile: Hey you, you forgot to make a nice picture of me!" I turned around, the boy put his head on his arms and it made Click! Loud and easy to hear. He was happy, I was happy. I never published these pictures, but they are my "First-Magdeburg-Pictures" and well, nearly 20 years ago, I still like them! :-) But Magdeburg, what a city! What can I say, Really... I was shocked, coming from fency western Frankfurt...to this poor East, oh my God. It is a color negative, of course, working for AP Frankfurt, they sponsored us freelancer with masses of FUJI color films, I think a 100 ASA (a good reason to work for them...). But as you see, I turned the image into b/w. If you are interested, I do remember the boy pretty good, his sweater had a strange color and the fence is in bright yellow. Yes. What the boy is now about? I would be curios! I hope he has a good life, made his way out of this ghetto area, however, thats the fate of photojournalists, they meet hundreds of people but you can never ever have them all with you. Impossible.
