About The Artwork

Sumo wrestlers are representing a long tradition and are symbols of power and strength. Because of its iconic status and their high reputation in Japan, the fighters usually live very closed off to conserve and concentrate on their unique sport ant its traditions. But with an image vision in mind, Bjoern Thomas made it after a six-month investigatory and organization phase to obtain two professional Japanese sumo wrestlers in front of his camera - including the five-time world champion and heaviest professional sumo fighter in Japan, with 260kg weight. In the resulting images, Bjoern show the two sumo wrestlers in fighting or meditative pose. However, they got also removed by the artist from their environment and appear to display symbols of real power, but also symbols of a political message. Bjoern developed a round picture, which appears to be an adapted Japanese flag. The white circle represents the atomic shell, the red circle the atomic nucleus, which is split in 3 pieces by a typical splits position of a sumo wrestler. This represents an uncontrolled nuclear fission, which finally lead to a catastrophe, as experienced in Fukushima. This setting came to his mind to reflect the power of a developed country and culture and on the other hand being defenseless to limit environmental impacts as demonstrated in Fukushima. The round artwork is called NUCLEAR FISSION.

Bjoern Thomas, born 1971 in Cologne, Germany. His work has been presented already in MIAMI, BASEL, NEW YORK or during the SHANGHAI Art Fair. The BLOODY SUPPER picture is shown at the SAATCHI MUSEUM in London on the top floor screen or has been sold to major collectors like the famous Pritzker family in Los Angeles or the unique Jan Eric Löwenadler collection in Sweden. Bjoern Thomas creates stimulating environments of people from all walks of life, presenting situations both real and fantastical in order to explore the complexities of human experience through an artistic and honest lens. He stylizes people in staged environments in order to theatrically combine fact with fiction, real people within symbolic and illuminated environments. Through his combination of reality with imagination, his subjects ranging from distant cultures in faraway lands to incarcerated gangsters and crime families become more than documentations of people in unfamiliar lived environments but become cinematic, adding a theoretical layer to his aesthetic portraits that triggers investigations into the alluded symbolic imagery. Bjoern Thomas uses photography to discover foreign elements prevalent in our society, exploring uncanny sub-cultures one does not personally understand. The photographer unearths the differences between individuals, the alien aspects one may never have personally encountered, seen most notably in his powerful “Gangster” series. He photographs released prisoners from Los Angeles correctional facilities not in their prison cells, but in expressive situations that explore the complexities of criminal actions; rather than voicing their injustice and deviant behaviors, Bjoern Thomas symbolizes their de-criminalization and entryway back into the guidelines of social justice. Bjoern Thomas’s photographs of minority individuals and distant cultures eloquently shows that the unknown is a dialectical phenomenon that eventually becomes familiar and not far removed from our own understanding of human existence.
