‘Lucy and a visitor’ Photograph - Limited Edition of 5

‘Lucy and a visitor’ was created at 2007 after seen Marlen Dumas, 'The second Coming' series (2004). Her portrait called ‘Lucy’ was inspired by Caravaggio's ‘Santa Lucia’ (1606). The powerful painting showing a lying female face seen in profile, greatly impressed me. The painting implied to so many aspects of matters: female body, politicized female, religious, fear, rape, sexuality, pleasure, anxiety. I lingered for a long time beside the pictures investigating the visitor’s behaver. To my surprise, I have noticed that most of the women visitors found it difficult to observe the works. Almost all of them looked from the side, with an indirect, hesitant, frightened gaze. Dumas practice is known in using by other artists works as a “model” and her attitude to “look at the relationship between the technological source material (i.e.: photographic models) and the meta-physical imagination (of the artist) it’s associative rather than descriptive’ (Marlene Dumas words). I wanted to relate to her art in a similar way. This how I created Lucy.
