About The Artwork

A vast landscape, I explored Joshua Tree National Park in southern California finding similarity between human forms and natural forms. The desert is ancient, distinct, heavier, harder, hotter, drier, and the natural palette is less saturated and more nuanced. I examined the pictorial representation and intersection between human forms and natural forms, offered by a sharply defined landscape sometimes altered by humans. Forgoing sweeping vistas, I closed in tight with my lens to bring out overlooked elements of the earth. When Georgia O’Keeffe painted closely observed subject matter, she reminded us to look at the details, the small things we miss most of the time. There is so much around us, it’s easy to pass by most things. In the desert, I took my time and this series is the result. I enjoy walking through the wilderness as much as I enjoy walking through the city. Each print is an original, and I use professional printers to create my photographic prints on archival Premium Luster paper, using archival pigment inkjet inks. This paper has a classic E-Type print surface that mimics the sheen and texture of traditional silver halide prints and most importantly offers superior longevity. I fell in love with photography as a young child when I “borrowed” my parent’s old Brownie Hawkeye to take pictures around my neighborhood. Later I was given a Kodak Instamatic 104 and expanded to street photography. I continued to explore photography while I pursued my career as a professional book designer, production artist and typographer. I've lived and worked in New Jersey, New York City, northern New England, Colorado and currently Los Angeles, where I enjoy exploring neighborhoods on foot. Walking for hours on city streets and taking photos is my idea of a great day.
