About The Artwork

On my last day on safari, my friend and guide Steven Ngowi and I headed out alone into the Northern Serengeti. We were searching for big cats. I was hopeful we’d spot one but wildlife photography has its way of testing your patience. We had been out in the early morning light for an hour when the magic happened and we came across this beautiful mother leopard. Initially, she was hiding her two cubs from our presence. We approached at a safe distance. Shut our vehicle off. Waited. She relaxed, giving an unforgettable call and within moments her babies came running to her. The small family bathed, played, and relaxed together under the rising sun. The image will be printed on Lumachrome Acrylic with TrueLife coating to provide unmatched color and clarity with float frame backing for an immediate display option.

After 20 years behind the lens, Derek Nielsen’s journey to capture, share—and ultimately, help preserve—the fragile beauty of our planet has taken him to more than two dozen countries and every continent. His stunning photographs don’t just inspire, they connect—linking audiences and resources all over the world to wildlife, landscapes, and people in desperate need of assistance, from Rwanda’s endangered silverback gorillas to the overfished waters of Antarctica. First moved to contribute to global conservation efforts while photographing the ominous splendor of Iceland’s Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a haunting manifestation of climate change, Derek provides a portion of the proceeds from each of his sustainably framed and matted works to on-the-ground, local conservation efforts, including The Conservation Alliance and Borneo’s The Borneo Project. A native of Chicago, Derek carries a friendly midwest smile eager for a conversation with strangers. If you see him in the field or out at events don’t hesitate to ask any questions or just start a conversation about wildlife, conservation, and of course photography.
