About The Artwork
Classical Greek culture explained all diseases and mood or "mood" from the influence of four bodily fluids called "humors": blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. According to this theory of the four humours proposed by Hippocrates excess blood caused hyperactive behaviors (manic, in current terminology), while the excess of black bile caused a depressed behavior, apathetic and a manifest sense of tristeza.2 The term "black bile "went on to become synonymous with sadness.
