About The Artwork

I made this painting for a lash business. The idea for the painting was initially based on some images that the client shared with me, which I then created a digital concept from. I kept the space in the mind in which the painting would live. I want people to feel at peace and immerse themselves in the imagery, reflecting the process of adding lashes as a relaxing experience. The clientele at the business is predominantly female and the choice of colour palette was based on the room and also choosing colours that were vibrant and calming at the same time. I chose magenta because it is a colour that does not actually exist within the visible spectrum. This plays on the whether or not this is a dream or reality. I like to play with this idea in many of my works, crossing the line between what's real and the other worldly. The subject is immersed in water and surrounded by surrealistic flowers, again emphasising stillness and the idea of serenity. Initially we thought about her eyes being closed and then we decided that it would be best that they were open, suggesting life, vitality and happiness. I chose fluid acrylics because it lends well to my layering process, using semi-transparent shapes and colours to create the forms. I also use layering of colour to create hue, tone, highllights and shadow.
