Wisdom and knowledge is better than physical strength. The Yoruba proverb "Alagbara ti ko ma ero, baba ole" emphasizes the idea that true strength lies not just in physical power but also in wisdom and intelligence. When we look at the history of the African slave trade, particularly in the context of powerful African kings and leaders selling their own people to European slave traders in exchange for goods like guns, bullets, mirrors, and other items, we see a tragic example of the consequences of prioritizing material gain over the well-being of one's own community. During the period of the transatlantic slave trade, some African leaders and rulers engaged in the capture and sale of fellow Africans to European slave traders in exchange for various goods. These African leaders often saw an opportunity to acquire wealth, weapons, and other material benefits through these transactions. However, in doing so, they betrayed their own people and participated in a system that caused immeasurable suffering and devastation to countless individuals and communities across the African continent. The exchange of human lives for material goods in the context of the slave trade reflects a profound lack of wisdom and moral integrity on the part of those who engaged in such practices. While they may have possessed physical strength and political power, their actions ultimately demonstrated a deep moral failing and a disregard for the well-being and dignity of their own people.
