Wind Painting

This painting was inspired by the wind. It imagines what wind could look like if you could see it directly rather than observe the consequences of it blowing things around. It uses a restricted palette of light blues, white, greys and browns. The composition complements an interior design. The oil paint was applied using a palette knife and mixed on the canvas using broad sweeping gestures. These create the sense of motion, energy and flow. The lower part of the canvas contains stronger darker forms and colours, designed to evoke the power of the elements. Towards the top the colours are lighter, the forms smaller, more gentle. A light blue sky emerges towards the top. Some observers have said a storm at the bottom gives way to a calmer breeze at the top. Curiously, the impression changes with the light. In summer, the colours appear warmer, in the winter - when outside light is bluer, the appearance changes to be bluer and cooler. As the seasons change, the appearance is always slightly different. This work is unframed. It is varnished with high gloss Dammar varnish such that it reflects the light in fleeting ways. There is an unpainted border around the edges of the canvas. This creates its own "frame" without overtly containing the work.
