My gifted parents passed—one in 2009 the other, a few years later. I made a series of minimal paintings with 100 layers of a given field of color to commemorate them for my series: Screens and Fields. White Screen, is a self-portrait, as I felt at the time I was reflecting everything, as white does in the physics of color. I used a variety of whites and lovingly layered each—whites over whites, and scraped and buffed each layer in between. An ultimate meditation. The medium is oil in high-melt wax over wood panel. It creates a warm translucent glow as it hovers 4" from the wall; when viewed from the side, a warm charcoal acrylic sinks the 4” side-edge, which angles at 45 degrees to the wall, allowing its presence of White Screen, to angelically hover on the wall. Adding a spotlight further enhances the many layers of white into its surface. This was made in a state of love and remembrance. Year Created: 2009

Washington, USA. 1964. Claremont Graduate University, MFA; Painting & Sculpture, Claremont, Ca., Washington State University, BFA; Art and Architecture Kerwin lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work resides in the spontaneously perceptive areas of proportion and measurements found in a lineage including Reinhardt, McGlaughlin, Agnes Martin and her own. Kerwin’s geometric abstraction, with an emphasis on color harmonies and balance, takes a new beat with each exhibition. Kerwin uses a variety of media to achieve her goals for each painting, which include: oil, oil in high melt waxes, and acrylic. These paintings have been called by critics in L.A. "sexy", "passionate", and "surfaces to dream on". Her work has been in over 110 exhibitions and is collected internationally. *Occasionally, while making her geometric abstractions, cows may leap out, and some are pictured here. Kerwin’s early years were spent on an expansive, wilderness cattle ranch in the Olympic mountains of Washington state, USA.
