When Wax Wings Wain Painting

The Australian Outback has offered me a lot of inspiration, in particular the sensuous limbs of the ghost gums. On a recent road trip 16 hours drive west of the captial city, the distincitve red dirt, wide spaces and intensity of the mid summer sunlight struck me powerfully, The country was in a seven year drought, then followed by bushfires, floods, and not long after the global pandemic. It seemed we were in a constant state of emergency. The ancient Greek Tragedy of Daedelus and his son Icarus, flying too close to the sun with his waxed wing device, plunged to his mortal death. The stark white forms of the gums branches reaching to the sky, to the sun, evoked in me, a sense of the tragedy and the myth.
