About The Artwork

These women do not present themselves for another's gaze, while looking away, coyly draped to obscure the clarity of themselves. The images capture women in command of their own sexuality. Often looking directly at the viewer, they assert their autonomy to upend a legacy of indoctrination that insists we exist chiefly to be desirous objects, tools, or vessels for the pleasure of others. These women insist the viewer reconsider the fallacy of birth right privilege that prioritizes male pleasure over women's. They challenge mens ability to interpret a partners behavior through the lens of their own wishes. They upend the male expectation that male pleasure controls both partners narratives. These are women who fully engage, who come into direct contact with the world and deem to navigate it on their own terms. To own their sexual power they push back against cultures physiological barriers and the pretexts of obscenity that would keep us from describing it. This piece is one panel of a trio created for the 'Owning Her Desire' series. It can be hung alone or as part of a triptych that includes ... 'What About Me', 'What I Want' and 'What I Know' All three are listed separately. This work is constructed of stacked layers of cutout wood panels which create a low relief. Defying convention they pop off the wall and stare out at us in a way that insists they be seen; not to simply look at them but to recognize their autonomy and presence.  See angled detail shots
