About The Artwork

In Laguna Beach we lived in a 1930's bungalow on a corner lot 2 blocks from the ocean. We had rehabbed it and preserved many of the original details. I was on the design review board in Laguna Beach for 6 years. I was referred to as "the cottage hugger" for my views on preserving historical character. It was a very petite house but had great original windows. Because our beach bungalow is on a south facing corner, we got a lot of great morning light all throughout the house. We never installed AC and just opened the windows to get a great sea breeze. I photograph scenes around the house, like this one, where the morning light came in the window. This one came about while reading the morning paper over coffee. This was my moment of calm to start the day. Home delivery of the Los Angeles Times and a pot of good coffee. I was interested in the muted tones of whites, grays, blues and violet and how they blended and offset one another. I enjoyed painting this work as it captured my morning ritual. The work is 20" x 24" The frame is a wooden black floater frame. The frame size is 21 1/4" x 25 3/8" x 2"

“The still lifes focus on intimate scenes from daily life, while the Film Noir & Western works evoke imagery inspired by the American films of that genre. “Initially I decided to focus on small intimate moments from my own life at home and while traveling, noticing when sunlight hit items in an interesting way.” “Painting is a creative outlet for me when I’m not acting. It gives me a feeling of control over my creative life. An actor often has to wait for projects to come along, but I can paint any time of the day. I sometimes describe my art as ‘spontaneous still life’. Whenever I see a likely subject, everything stops and I take photographs. This holds the moment in time until I can paint it.” “When working from the photos I don't necessarily want to re-create it exactly, but look to reimagine it. I do this it by adding color, and working with the light source to represent a mood or capture a feeling.” Unless otherwise noted, the compositions are oils on canvas or linen and range in size from 5” x 8” to 30” x 40”.
