Memories coil into seemingly benign objects, and spring forth from a lamp, or a sofa, or a refrigerator—weaponized without a moment’s notice—by their associations to a painful event. When you live with such a dangerous past bubbling below the present, and the past and present become so close together within a sense of reality, the friction is hot and dangerous; combustion feels inevitable and survival impossible, unless there is a big bang of movement forward. This painting exists right before that moment. The frame does not include glass, but the paper is mounted to archival foam board and sprayed with protective fixative.

Over the past few years, she has compulsively painted heartbroken femmes that magically grow larger, stronger, and scarier than the world around them. As the paintings grow in number, she grows just a little larger, stronger, and scarier too. Meg works from rural Wisconsin. She splits her time painting between a little blue shack in a junkyard and the storefront artist collective, The Yellow Room.
