I had been doing Jerusalem rooftops from my parents' flat, both were in fragile health. The stillness in my space and air, heighten my awareness how these homes made up intimate parts of different lives. This change in atmosphere from vibrant to sleepily calm made me take notice of the surrounding buildings. The small details of the building facades were like the quiet unrecorded moments which made up our lives. Each time I looked I found subtle color variations of the red tiled roofs and the aging stone buildings. Instead of creating separate complexes it turned into a unified, breathing structure holding life's intimacies.Night changes what we see or enables us to appreciate that in fact we are always only seeing what’s lit up and how we understand things based on what we see – but what we are seeing doesn’t always reflect what there is. Spaces look solid, solid areas look like holes and colors change and take on a life of their own The lights in the darkness make things seem unreal, dreamlike, – open to all possibilities.

Israel
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, living in Israel since 1974. I have always been a landscape painter. A few years ago I started noticing the trucks: the powerful Mack trucks building the new neighborhood of Har Homa and the highly decorated trucks that plied the roads of Judea. Trucks that reflected the strength of the landscape and trucks that imposed a harmony of color and shape upon it. While the trucks seem to upstage and dominate the landscape in fact the landscape contains and displays them. Painting the trucks for me represents the daily existence between Jews and Arabs expressed through an aesthetic reality - the complexities and contradictions that are a part of my life here.
