About The Artwork

An 116 x 81 x 2.5 cm abstract acrylic on canvas which continues a theme influenced by the 17th century militarily defensive fortifications around more than 300 French towns, cities and seaports planned by General Vauban. His works, both on paper and those still impressively visible today in many locations, are a strong influence in my more recent artwork, and in this piece I have created an abstract impression, almost a maze, of angular structures, randomly situated in the sea, being utilized to protect a coastline. The artwork was prepared by randomly stretching multiple cotton threads across the canvas, then organizing my painted angular shapes along several of the thread axes where they crossed. My primarily blue acrylics were applied to the canvas with a palette knife, twisting and turning the paint-loaded blade to create the impression of surging seawater… so in effect a ’negative/positive’ image emphasizing the geometric, graphic feeling on the pure white ground.

Abstract artist... stock photographer... writer... plant-based... fixie-cyclist... minimalist... and easy going, I studied Interior Design at art college in the 1960s, then worked in the TV and film industry for more than a decade, before turning to photography full-time. Later I published and edited specialist photographic magazines on darkroom techniques for several years and continue to supply digital images to the world's largest photo agency from my current location here in France. However, in a hard working retirement I spend much more time and energy as an abstract fine artist working with all media from old-fashioned paper, pencil and paint to creative collage and canvas.
