About The Artwork
This painting was the first in the series Childhood Threads. The girl in the painting was painted from a photograph taken in the 1920s and placed in a new context. The girl would have been a contemporary of the artist's Grandmother and she depicts the little girl on a map of Canada an immigrant or the child of immigrants settling in a new country. The patterned background and the map on the floor suggests an unreal or fantasy space. The doll and the dog along with the girl are painted in black and white like a vintage photograph which is one of the sources of the image.
