'Untitled' 2012/13 Painting

Born in Ireland 1986. Lives and works in Dublin Ireland I am interested in the unique qualities of paint and how these qualities can be pushed to their physical limits. I generate work through process, making objects (paintings) in a non-traditional manner. By pouring, syringing, cutting, stretching and peeling I manipulate paint during its drying process. While the paint is drying I use a tattoo machine to penetrate the paint skin/surface and can introduce other pigments in clean sharp lines without disrupting its formed surface. I adapted it to cut clean lines in order to create sections of paint layers. With these sections I then like to contort and stretch the relationship the paint establishes with its support surface. These can be folded in a minimal origami like process, creating a transition between the support's surface and its edges. It intrigues me how manipulation of the support's surface and the paint's properties itself can weaken its flat natural form. This weakening I see as a strength within my work and a challenge that forces the properties of paint even further to extremes, and amplifies its physical presence on the support object. Through this process I bring together the material, ground and subject of the work.
