Unsettling Painting

This work was inspired by the island of Bali and all its contradictions: the enchanting vegetation, the dark ubiquitous temples, the deeply spiritual environment, the mixture of architectural styles on each city block. I was overwhelmed by the crowds, scooters and chaos of the urban areas and the quiet beauty of the countryside. It seemed impossible that all of this could coexist in one small island. My intention was to convey all these contradictions in this piece. Some aspects of it, like the spiritual life of the island were tightly knit. Other aspects reflected places coming apart and being re-woven by outside influences. Fabric seemed an ideal material to use.
