As I wait for the layers of my larger pieces to dry I like to create these small studies on the brilliant archival Arches Oil paper. Creating these tiny textured paintings is both really enjoyable and great practice! I have made these so they can be put straight into an A5 frame. I love the way tiny paintings fit into your life easily and can be hung in unexpected places. I have made these in exactly the same way as my larger works, fluorescent base, layers for the hands and palette knife applied background so there is a balance between the constructed realism of the hand and the gestural looseness of the background.

Originally from New Zealand, I have been in the U.K. for 20 years now, after 18 years in London I relocated out to the lush Kent countryside where I paint in a studio at the bottom of the garden with my dog and 6 Music. In my paintings I love the idea of recreating the physical memory of water, sunshine and light. I aim to capture in a single moment the exhilaration, the joy, the solitude or the tranquility of being in the water. I explore all manner of subjects in my work but I find the underlying connection of water seems to reoccur continuously.
