Under Eagles' Worlds Painting

Under Eagles' Worlds is an oil painting of the Hill End landscape, the title inspired by a poem about that part of the world by Les Murray. Hill End, a former gold mining township 5 hours north west of Sydney Australia was the site Joanna Cole painted en plain air for the first time with artist Luke Scriberras. She has been developing images from the 20 plus studies and photographs since that 2015 experience and exploring notions of the Australian relationship with The Outback, and her own relationship with the land. The place is now known for its Artists in Residence, the bushland is still formidable, and blocks of land off the Main Street are unfenced paddocks, often playing lounge room to a dozen or so sleepy Eastern Grey kangaroos. The dirt up there is red, and the stones are white, native flora is small but intense. The sunshine, intense blue skies, make for intensely coloured everything. Joanna Cole seeks to evoke and remember that uplifted feeling of sitting comfortably in the bushland, the fresh air, and the frontier style freedom of these parts of Australia, (not too far from a good meal and a warm bed.)
