About The Artwork

Divas is a series inspired on four woman that have had my attention for number of years now. This paining is of Nahui Olin. Nahui Olin, b.1893 d.1978, (aged 84), born in Mexico. Model, poet, painter actress. Born Carmen Mondragon lived in Paris were she met Picasso, Matisse and poet Jean Cocteau. Her beauty was described as mesmerising and erotic, and apparently first woman to wear a miniskirt in Mexican catholic scene. She was posing for painter Diego Rivera, and photographers Tina Modotti and Edward Weston. Her lover Gerald Murillo “Dr. Atl” named her Nahui Olin, an Aztec symbol for earthquake. Nahui is considered a woman who both embraced and shaped the 1920’s and 1930’s in Mexico through her activism and creativity. In 2019 the Spanish novelist Juan Bonilla published "Totalidad sexual del Cosmos", inspired on her life. In 2020, this novel won the National Prize for Literature in Spain. My name is Ynes, I am Latin-Kiwi full time artist, living in the beautiful South Island in Timaru - Te tihi o maru. I hail from Mexico and been in New Zealand - Aotearoa over ten years. I am married to a Timaru man that is also an artist. I create art with a few main ideas in my mind, keep it simple and never boring. They help me complete the puzzle of creating. My style is bold, colourful, and smart. I am passionate about life and happiness. I am a disciplined artist that enjoys a day of solitude and work. I am focused on equity, and achievement in high contrasts. I held my first Solo Exhibition at the Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū in November 2021. Since then I have relocated with my husband to our house in Timaru and build a 50 m2 studio where I currently work full time.
