It seems only weeks ago I was freely shopping in the supermarket. People in masks were considered overly cautious. I feel like all of civilization has been forced into an online existence within a month. Now is the only thing that is real, I will always long for the days past, we must remember a time before our forced isolation. I set some of the mouse traps in this painting to represent the tension I currently feel in the buzz around me. They will remain encased in latex paint, unable to change their state until their potential energy is slowly drained over time and they exist, again, in a normal and relaxed state. I fear there will never be a day where we let our guard down and go back to "normal", take up shaking hands again and freely gather in public, this marks a change that will create the new norm. This painting is symbolic that we all must accept that this new world will become our reality and we must adapt. « I hope you will see a starting point and maybe get a bit lost: I hope that you will dream. » Emerging artist Chris Crewe compares life to a trapeze act. Always knowing that the next rung will be there, he hasn't fallen yet. The Canadian artist has been studying the use of sledgehammer as a paintbrush, replicating marks, and incorporating them into his abstract works. Crewe also makes paint markers out of plastic bottles by melting the plastic to turn the lid into a spout, often using them to draw in free-flowing gestures. His unique works are meant to 'brighten your day'.
