Trapped Light Painting

As a painter I have had a long standing fixation with water. This painting provided a kind of breakthrough for me, because during its conception, I realized that water offers the perfect vehicle to contemplate impermanence and emphemerality. When I make work, I work closely from a source photograph. I capture an incredibly brief split second, and the configuration of the body, the light, and the water, and the resultant distortions, are entirely unique to that individual precise moment. Water creates this uniqueness, I believe, more than any other environment. I feel it is crucial to remember the fleetingness of time, something that is so easy to forget in our busy lives. We appreciate joy more intensely when we acknowledge its fleetingness, whilst in times of pain, it can be a comfort to remember that, like all things, it shall pass. Interestingly, the painting process I employ, and the intense intricacy of my work, means that as I capture this brief fractured moment of time on canvas, and in sense remove it from the press of time, I devote weeks of my own time to it, and I enjoy the tension of this.
